cape york prime fishing times
The Run Off : Mid April to Mid June
Just after the wet season, the Barramundi fishing in the Cape York Peninsular is fantastic. The reason for this is that the big females feed like crazy as they have just made the long swim back up the rivers after spawning down in the coastal reaches of Princess Charlotte Bay. These mature fish are also aware that the "dry" is coming, and soon the rivers will stop flowing. The Barramundi eat everything they possible can in order to lay enough fat on to get them through the lean winter months. And that’s why the fishing here in the Cape York Peninsular is so good!.
The Build Up: Mid August to Mid November
After the winter months the Barramundi in Cape York spring back to life in order to put on condition for the long swim back down the rivers to the salt water in order to spawn again. This period of time is referred to as the build up, and occurs right before the wet season.
Your Preferred Fishing Period:
Mid/Late April
May
Early/Mid June
Mid/Late August
September
October
Early/Mid November
Timing of your trip to Cape York is important. Lunar phases have a strong influence on species sought and the style and quality of the fishing. The quarters are better for pelagic while the full moon stirs up the Barramundi. We know, from experience, where to go for the best fishing according to all of the conditions at the time.
For an ideal all-round fishing trip to Cape York, fishing between the first quarter and the full moon just after the wet or in the lead up to it, generally produces the best results. For this reason we will determine the best fishing times for your selected tour month and liaise with you to finalise a suitable date itinerary.
