transportation

Wellington is strategically sited close to the geographic centre of New Zealand and is the vital hub in our network of air, road, rail and sea links.

Wellington International Airport is served by Air New Zealand, Qantas, Air Pacific and Polynesian Airlines with regular flights to/from Australia and the Pacific Islands. Domestic airline services operate to all our major towns. From the terminal building it is just 15 minutes drive to downtown Wellington and shuttle buses provide a door-to-door service for travellers. Taxi services are efficient and provide good value.

Local Stagecoach bus services link the city centre with most suburban areas, and major bus stops are located at the Railway Station and Courtenay Place. Daytripper passes can be purchased from drivers and give unlimited bus travel, including the Cable Car. The City Circular Bus takes in local attractions such as Te Papa, the Cable Car and Parliament Buildings. The Rover Bus runs from Wakefield Street Visitor Information Centre on a long city circuit that includes Mt Victoria, Owhiro Bay, Lyall Bay and the Miramar Peninsula.

Wellington has the best suburban railway service in the country. Electric trains operate on a regular frequency to Upper Hutt, Johnsonville, Paraparaumu and through the Rimutaka Range to Masterton in the Wairarapa. The daytime Overlander train departs for Auckland in the morning and the Northerner leaves in the evening each day. Long distance bus transport is run by both Intercity and Newmans departing for Auckland and other North Island centres daily. The buses depart from the depot beside No.9 Platform at the Railway Station.

The Interislander ferry leaves from the Ferry Terminal for Picton on a regular schedule with 4 or 5 daily departures.
