Can we easily obtain food and other supplies as we travel?
The short answer to that is yes. New Zealand has several major supermarket chains and produce markets with branches in most cities and townships spread the length and breadth of the country. Most small villages have a general store and take away outlets.
As with similar operations overseas, the major brand service station outlets offer groceries and ready to eat foodstuffs, confectionery, coffee, drinks and snacks.
Many rural communities hold regular market days where local produce and products are offered for sale. Generally the quality of these products is superb and the prices are very, very cheap by comparison to normal retail outlets. It’s also a great opportunity to connect with the locals over a cup of coffee or a market day snack.
Farm shops and farm produce stalls, which you will pass on your travels also offer beautiful fresh produce right there on the roadside. In some areas, including the beautiful Kaikoura coastline, freshly cooked crayfish (rock lobster) can be bought from roadside stands to provide a wonderful special treat. In season, asparagus stalls, most working to an honesty box system, spring up around the countryside offering this delightful delicacy for just a few dollars a kilo.
