DoC manages New Zealand’s 14 National Parks, World Heritage Areas, Marine Parks and special conservation areas throughout the country.
This Government Department manages pest control and the welfare of native species as well as a host of other functions, including maintaining a network of almost 1000 huts in the New Zealand backcountry. DoC also manages 250 camping areas that are all accessible by vehicle. As well they have cabins and cottages spread throughout the country. DoC Visitor Centres, which are situated in or near most National Parks, are a mine of valuable information with maps and leaflets outlining scenic and natural attractions and walks. These are readily available and most are free of charge.
